Just a few days before Star Wars Celebration this year, the Del Rey Twitter page started a curious hashtag – #OperationBlueMilk. We all subsequently lost our minds speculating what on Tatooine this could mean. We were soon put out of our misery as Del Rey announced that #OperationBlueMilk was the code name for a new and exciting book project they have been working on. Star Wars: From A Certain Point of View is going to be an anthology book celebrating the 40 year anniversary of A New Hope. Here’s a link to the official announcement page.
As mentioned above, us Star Wars fans love to speculate, we’re very good at it and we thoroughly enjoy it! So, I thought it would be fun to put together a list of some of my wild theories and hopes for this new novel, and some of the points of view I hope to see!
1. Dr Aphra
I mean, c’mon it’s Aphra! We’ve got to have more Aphra! For anyone unsure, Dr Chelli Aphra is a space archaeologist who winds up working for Darth Vader after the destruction of the first Death Star and generally winds up getting herself in trouble! I would love to see what she was up to before these events! Maybe she was lurking in the Mos Eisley cantina? It definitely seems like her kind of place! Or maybe she spots the Millennium Falcon blasting off out of the space port? Who knows? One thing is for sure, more Aphra is definitely a good thing!
2. Aunt Beru
Picture this, Uncle Owen has just asked her where Luke is and she replies that she thinks he has taken the two new droids out. She then carries on preparing the dinner for that night, mulling over their conversation from the night before. ‘There’s too much of his father in him’ she had said to Owen. ‘That’s what I’m afraid of’ he replied. She then reflects on the time that she met Anakin Skywalker, all those years before. A young man, a budding Jedi Knight, accompanied by a beautiful woman, a senator, half-mad with grief for the loss of his mother. Then, a few years later, a Jedi named Obi-Wan Kenobi appears, his features marred with pain and anguish, carrying with him a baby and bringing such terrible, unthinkable news. Then, a distant sound interrupts her reverie, she looks up from her work to see a line of Dewbacks on the horizon, and their mounts…clad all in white… Imperial Stormtroopers.
3. Wuher – the Mos Eisley Cantina barkeep
Just who is this man, and how long has he been running this joint for? It must take quite a forceful personality to run a cantina in the hive of scum and villainy that is Mos Eisely! What’s his background? What did he make of Imperials raiding his bar all the time? And, more importantly, where did he get such strong anti-droid prejudices? What did a droid do to him to cause him to display that level of hostility towards C-3PO and R2-D2? We need answers!
4. Ponda Baba
I want to know what really went down between him and Luke. Did he really not like Luke when he first saw him? Or was he actually asking Luke where he got his snappy white tunic from? Then Evazan interrupts looking for a fight. Maybe Ponda is actually quite fed up. Maybe this always happens whenever they try to go out for a quiet drink and Evazan always ends up starting a fight? Perhaps Ponda is quietly thinking it’s about time someone chopped Evazan’s arm off!
5. Bail Organa
Imagine a scene where Bail is on Alderaan, looking out over the verdant surroundings but not really seeing the beauty in front of him. All he can think is that Leia, his beloved adopted daughter is late. She should have checked in by now. He knows something terrible must have happened to her. Then…a monstrous spherical space station appears on the horizon, and Bail closes his eyes in despair….no I can’t imagine that either! On second thoughts, let’s not have this scene – too heartbreaking!
6. Mouse Droid
It’s always good to get a droid’s perspective, and what better than these skittish little things? I’ve always wondered what their purpose is, are they simply guides to lead you to your destination in the Death Star? This makes sense given how massive the Death Star is, so many people must get lost on there! Do these little droids get trodden on much? Maybe we could have the point of view of the little mouse droid who got roared at by Chewie. Did he run back to the other mouse droids and exclaim ‘you’ll NEVER believe what I just saw’?!
7. A Stormtrooper on the Death Star as it blows up
I don’t think this one is too controversial. We’ve already seen the Death Star destroyed from the Rebels’ perspective. We’ve all cheered and whooped and clapped as Luke fires his proton torpedo into the thermal exhaust port which I now like to call ‘Galen’s Revenge’. But what was it like on board, when the walls were shaking and the sirens are wailing? Did anyone suspect for one minute that they weren’t safe? Were people running around in panic, or were they calmly manning their stations and going about their work? There were estimated to be well over 1 million people aboard the Death Star, I want to see a little glimpse of their lives!
Picture this, a lone Togrutan on a sleepy, backwater planet far in the Outer Rim. She bears the scars of a battle she barely survived, and deeper, less visible scars, from a betrayal too great to comprehend. She craves normality, peace, a chance to heal. Then she begins to hear rumours, perhaps a static heavy announcement on the HoloNet, Governor Tarkin dead, victory for the Rebel Alliance and the Death Star destroyed by a young pilot named Skywalker…
So there you have it! Those are just a handful of stories I would love to see in Star Wars: From a Certain Point of View. There is such a rich cast of characters from A New Hope, I can’t wait to see what they come up with!
